The Emperor.

Whilst on another butterfly foray today I came across several of our most aggressive odenata, the Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator), vigourously  patrolling their territories throughout the glades and woodland edges by chasing away all and any interlopers.

Fortunately one individual male decided to take a brief rest and provided an opportunity for me to get a close up view.

All images taken with the 70-300 lens, handheld.  FAB

  12. Great shots of the Emperor!
That is definitely one of my favourite dragons although quite common in France and not too difficult to shoot especially laying females, fortunately!
The males can be quite cooperative especially in the late afternoon after a long patrolling day but often hide in the grass and that is quite frustrating!
These pics are brilliant, Frank! I lobe the mix of blues and greens!
Many thanks for kindly commenting our publications on Libellules de France! ;-)

  21. Wow! Beautiful shots. Great close-ups. And the background is nice (the green brings out the green/blue even more). - It seems like every time I take a photo of a dragonfly they're on a dead flower!
