For Wild Bird Wednesday I'm sharing a few images of Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) taken during a recent holiday at Lake Garda, Italy.
This is our largest Grebe in the UK and whilst most bird guides say it is not shy I usually find that as soon as I get within range with the lens they always drift away! On Lake Garda this was not always the case and as several pairs were regularly spied drifting around the small harbour the opportunity to get some closer shots was very much welcomed.
All images shot 'handheld' with 450D and 70-300 lens. FAB.
I love grebes! They are so cute and sweet looking. Have not seen the crested ones before. Lovely images of this beautiful duck!

Hi Frank these are beautiful birds to watch and these are great shots of them.
ReplyDeletethey can be tricky for sure. But I think they can grow costumed to people. So, in some places they can allow closer approach. :)

ReplyDeleteGreat Crested Grebes have become one of my favourite birds to photograph this year, they are such stunning birds yet easy for everyone to overlook as they are so common.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. We have Great Crested Grebes breeding on a loch near me and I watched several pairs doing their courtship dance earlier this year. Beautiful birds aren't they.
