Garden - Mid March

Today I was very lazy...failed to respond to the alarm to go out early and overslept...probably due to age and a hectic week at work!
So I spent the 2nd half of the day in the garden, pruning a large Buddleja, digging out a deceased Euphorbia, removing an unwanted Cornus and replacing with Alliums grown in pots and a Miscanthus moved from another location. From time to time I was accompanied by the inquisitive Robin, several Greenfinches, a single Goldfinch, the pair of Long-tailed Tits and a Blue Tit plus the noisy screams of Rose-ringed Parakeets flying overhead.
Evidence of spring colour is beginning to brighten up our lives, particularly from spring flowering bulbs and new growth on shrubs. Below are Scilla siberica & young leaves on a Spirea.

Other colour coming from various other plants - Clockwise from top left:
Bergenia 'Morning Red', Narcissus 'Itzim', Brunnera, Anemone blanda, Muscari armeniacum, catkins on the twisted Hazel, a very dark Hellebore orientalis and the first blooms on a potted Prunus incisa 'Kojo-No-Mai'.

  9. Beautiful! Nice to be enjoying them after cold winter weather. Out here in SE Queensland I am hoping it might cool down soon and growth slow down. I haven't been able to keep up and at present parts of my garden are like an uncontrolled jungle. Ah well, all things change!

  10. Yes Roy, but the habit repeated itself today!

Jayne, I hope it won't be long before I can see your garden colours.

Warren. One makes time for what one enjoys. Gardening & birdwatching at the same time - what could be better.

  12. Nice...beautiful flowers. My daffodils have just popped through the ground and look to be a bout a week away from blooming. Let's hope it doesn't snow before then. I like the blooming montage.

  13. It's a great time of year for gardens and combining gardening and watching birds has to be a top activity in my book.

My Kojo-No-Mai has burst into flower over the last couple of days too - lovely!

  16. Hi, sorry for the delay in responding.

Kelly, I look fwd to seeing your daffs & will pray for good weather for you. The collage was a bit of fun & glad it worked.

Tricia, it's that time of year when it's a difficult choice - gardening or go out birding. Sometimes you just have to give in to tasks at home!

Spookydragonfly, I to hope it won't be long before you can capture thos beautiful spring images.

Shelly. Thanks, I'll have to see if Anita (the 'cardmaker') wants to use them!

  19. Chris, I found more evidence of spring blooms today at work plus a Blackcap starting to sing.

Birdlady, welcome & thank you. I agree with you, the change was a tonic, although the current economic climate will present us with some new challenges. Fortunately I think gardening & bird feeding will probably ride the storm. Best wishes.

  20. What beautiful flowers Frank, and so much color already! Aside from blooming daffodils and crocuses, the only wildflower I've seen in bloom so far is something called Coltsfoot. Your picture of the Hellebore reinforces the notion that I want to plant some in my garden "sometime." Hopefully this year will be my "sometime."

Wow, a very straightforward word for word verification: south.

Oh, and if I don't make it back before the time officially comes, Happy Spring!

  21. Hi Heather. I didn't know much about Hellebores until I started work at RHS & now I wouldn't be without them in the garden - so many different colours. Go for it you won't be sorry.
I wonder who got east, west & north? I see the Pheobe has been very busy. Lol Frank
