Master Spinners.

Every time I walk out into the garden I'm faced with numerous orb webs intricately created by the Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus) to catch any unwary insects and me if I'm not watching where I'm walking!

Individual colouring can vary from extremely light yellow through to very dark grey but they all carry the distinctive markings across their backs with a series of white dots forming a cross or diadem hence the common names of Cross Spider, Diadem Spider and Garden orb-web Spider.

Fascinating to watch as they create their delicate webs (click here for a video link) or rush out of hiding in response to a vibration.

Just hanging from a single thread. [All images taken with the PowerShot SX50 HS.]  FAB.

Linking to Saturday's Critters.

  2. I don't care for spiders but must admit they do have nice patterns on their bodies. I don't relish in walking into webs though. Great shots!

  3. Super shots of the spiders even if they aren't my favorite critters. The webs are works of art.

  4. Those webs must be the most cursed webs in the land...and I always feel a little guilty when I inadvertently walk through one and destroy all the spiders hard work! I've spent more than a few hours sitting, watching and being fascinated as these masters go about their business.
    Lovely study Frank...[;o)

  6. While ideas creep me out, Frank, your explanation of their spots makes me curious. So tomorrow I am going to take a closer look...just not as close as you!...:)JP

  10. Fabulous shots FAB! Don't you just love the SX50? It's fast becoming my "go to" camera of choice. I'm getting to where I just don't want to pack the heavy weight of a DSLR with numerous lenses anymore.

  12. Spiders intrigue me with their webs for photographing them, and your images are outstanding! Now let one of these get in my home, well then we have a whole other story! ;)

  13. Great shots, their patterns all look unique. I like the second row, L spider's pattern with the ripples down the sides. I notice it's really hard to get them face on so you can see their eyes. I walk into lots of webs this time of year.
