Solitary Small Copper.

During a butterfly foray today close to the southernmost border of Surrey I came across a  solitary but very restless Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) flying around and occasionally landing to feed on one of the many patches of Common Fleabane, its  popular nectar source.

  1. Lovely shots! I didn't see many butterflies this summer probably due to the cold June.

  2. Nice find Frank and lovely images. I was surprised to see one on Monday at a small local nature reserve, I'm assuming from a third brood?...[;o)

    1. Cheers Trevor.

Strangely I don't recall seeing any earlier this year but you are right this one was certainly a 3rd brood male.

Have not seen any in the garden this year............plenty of blooms for them including fleabane .
Obviously a bad year for them............

    1. Hi Cheryl.
They are very rare visitors to my garden. I don't recall recording any sightings earlier this year but as the present fliers are from a 3rd brood there must have been some somewhere. They fly well into October so time for one or two to visit you.
