Fallow Buck.

Just before the end of 2012 during a wander around a local park I located a fairly large herd of the resident Fallow Deer. Adopting my usual stealthy approach I managed to get quite close to one of the older bucks. For this species the males become adult at eight years and provided the antler development is reasonably good, the 'palm' should be about five inches in width. I therefore estimated that this beast may well qualify for the term 'Great Buck'.

He was always alert to my presence but wasn't fazed by the clicking camera.

Whichever way he turned he kept a beady eye on the 'watcher'. I have a few more images of some other members of this herd which I'll share another time.    FAB.

  1. Wow Frank... you were braver than I would ever be. Great images - look forward to seeing more :-)

I have childhood memories of Red Deer roaring on a hillside where there were dips and I could hear them and not see them - it was a bit scary and I fled pretty sharpish! It was probably rutting time but I didn't remember knowing that at the time :-0

  3. Rather small ears on these critters. The antler is somewhat like our moose.

  7. Frank he's magnificent! You must have been thrilled to get so close to him! He resembles our Elk, but out Elk don't get the "palming" of their antlers like this guy.
